The Former Pres. Roh Jumps To Death.
S. Korea is a weird place. Almost all of the internet sites have commenting sections where people leave their comments, thoughts, opinions, and ideas. Usually, they are full of cursing someone. When celebrities or people commit suicides because of horrifying comments people have written, people then realize that they have done something really awful and they wish the dead to rest in peace. However, that still does not go for a long time. People start criticizing other people again.
Around 8:45 A.M. on May 23, 2009, South Korea’s former president, Roh Moo Hyun committed suicide. He jumped off a rock in a mountain which is near his residence. People could not believe it. Numerous numbers of people cried when they heard the news. The country literally could not wake up from the shock for days. On every Korean internet sites, there were people’s comments like “RIP,” , “We love you,” , “We’re sorry for everything,” or ”It is the present government that killed him!” Even though they hated Roh for the fact that he accepted bribes from people when he was the president, they still write comments like “You were the best president. Now that you are gone, Korea is going to perish.”
Before the atrocious day, S. Korea has been unstablizied for a long time. Basically, the whole country was and still is against the present president, Myung Bak Lee. 99% of the citizens curse at him, hate him, and literally wants to assassinate him. The citizens of S. Korea think President Lee is making the country into his very own and get rid of democracy. They think he is making all these weird laws which are not fair for them. They think they have made a big mistake of choosing him last year during the election. Most importantly, they think that it is he, the present president, that killed the former president, President Roh.
Don’t people think it is their fault for former President Roh’s death? It really upsets me that people are blaming President Lee for Roh’s death. I strongly think that President Lee does not have anything to do with Roh’s death. Why would the present government even try to kill Roh? It is actually worse for them because they cannot prove Roh for being guilty of accepting bribes. They would have to stop investigating. The best thing for them is to prove Roh guilty of his actions and let things be.
This is only my opinion, but Roh was a pretty bad president. He literally abolished many laws and did things the way he wanted them to be. He hated people that did not agree with him. Because what he said on TV, having thousands of people watching, this man committed a suicide. After his ruling (?), S. Korea has been going very chaotic. There are no rules in S. Korea anymore. People don’t follow any rules. They ignore everything.
These days, President Lee is trying to settle things down. And because of that, he is abhored by everyone. President Lee is trying to make laws again to make people behave orderly and to not ruin the country. Last time, when the government gave citizens a certain amount of time to have a memorial service. The government said that after 12:00 A.M., people would have to get banners, pictures, posters, and flowers down because that is going to make traffic. Citizens agreed. However, even in the morning, when it was around the rush hour, nothing was gone. There were even people laying on streets, mourning. Thus, the government had to order the policemen to get rid of those people. Of course, those people did not leave without any drama. They cried even more and cursed at the policemen for not being respectful to Roh. This just does not make any sense to me. I get that they are trying to be respectful and that they are sad that Roh passed away, but a rule is a rule.
It is definitely a shame to have a former president to commit suicide. It is the first time ever in history. I do not think it is even a right thing to have a memorial service for someone that has committed suicide. Although he may not be the present leader, but he did represent South Korea before and he should be responsible for his actions even after his ruling years. The past 2 weeks, the fact of me being a Korean has been an embarassment.
